NEC Packs record 99.9 Wh battery into sub-kilogram Lavie BM94C business laptop

NEC unveiled its Lavie BM94C business laptop in Japan in late July 2026, featuring a 14-inch display and weighing about 999 grams. The company said the model packs a record 99.9 watt-hour battery, approaching the aviation carry-on limit, to deliver extended battery life for corporate users.

The NEC Lavie BM94C features a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 99.9 watt-hours, which NEC officials said approaches the upper limit allowed for airline carry-on devices. According to NEC’s specifications, the battery can deliver approximately 30.5 hours of video playback and up to 50.8 hours of idle time under the JEITA 3.0 testing standard, a Japanese industry benchmark for battery life measurement. NEC’s internal research positions these figures as class-leading for sub-kilogram corporate laptops. The company also stated that 30 minutes of fast charging can provide enough power for a full workday of about eight hours, enabling users to recharge during short breaks such as lunch.

The company highlighted that this capacity sits just below the common 100 Wh threshold set by many airlines, allowing passengers to bring the laptop aboard without requiring special approval.

The BM94C weighs about 999 grams, officially listed on NEC’s Japanese product page, keeping it just under the 1-kilogram mark. Japanese media reports and NEC’s materials attribute the laptop’s low weight and long battery endurance to the use of Toray’s latest carbon fiber technology in the chassis construction. The 14-inch IPS display offers a 1920 by 1200 resolution with a non-glare surface and LED backlight, designed for business productivity in typical office lighting conditions. NEC and Japanese IT press characterized the BM94C as a mobile workhorse tailored for dense daily schedules and global business travel, emphasizing durability and portability. Both NEC and media coverage underscored the unusual engineering achievement of combining a near-100 Wh battery with a sub-kilogram body.

The BM94C is powered by Intel Core Ultra processors, with configurations available in Core Ultra 5 and Core Ultra 7 models. NEC officials confirmed that the Core Ultra 5 variants support Intel’s vPro Enterprise platform, aimed at enhancing remote management and enterprise security. The laptop offers 16 GB or 32 GB of soldered LPDDR5X memory and encrypted solid-state drives in capacities of 256 GB, 512 GB, or 1 TB. It ships with Windows 11 Pro, consistent with its enterprise-class positioning. The machine’s port selection includes two Thunderbolt 4 ports, two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports, a full-size HDMI port, and wired Gigabit Ethernet. NEC emphasized that this comprehensive I/O array is unusual for a sub-kilogram device and facilitates connectivity with external displays, legacy USB devices, and wired networks without reliance on dongles, important for corporate meeting rooms and offices.

The BM94C is the flagship model in NEC’s refreshed Lavie business lineup, which comprises seven products with staggered launches planned through July to September 2026. NEC announced the BM94C publicly in Japan in late July 2026 as part of its AI PC business range. The company confirmed that, as of the July 23 announcement, sales would be limited to Japan, with no international availability announced. The laptop’s starting price in Japan is ¥584,100, which tech media converted to approximately $3,566 based on exchange rates around July 24, 2026.
