Ring’s New Spotlight Camera Is Astoundingly Good, if You Turn Off Its AI Surveillance
Ring unveiled its new Spotlight Cam line with upgraded 2K and 4K resolution and AI-powered features during Amazon’s hardware event, with preorders opening in April and shipments expected later this month. According to company officials, the cameras offer enhanced image quality through “Retinal Vision” processing and include opt-in AI functions such as familiar face recognition and smart video search.
The new Spotlight Cam line includes the Spotlight Cam Plus with 2K resolution and the Spotlight Cam Pro 4K (second generation), which records at 3840×2160 pixels and 24 frames per second, according to Ring officials. The standard Spotlight Cam retails for around $249 in the U.S., while the Pro version is priced at approximately $349. Comparable pricing is listed for the U.K., with the Spotlight Cam near £249 and the Pro model near £349, according to Amazon’s product launch materials.
The Pro model supports continuous 24/7 cloud recording with a premium subscription, priced at about $20 per month or $200 annually.
Ring’s new cameras employ “Retinal Vision” processing, which the company says enhances image detail, color accuracy, and sharpness. Reviewers have noted that the Pro model’s 4K resolution allows it to capture practical details such as license plates at distances of about 40 feet. The Spotlight Cam Pro also features two adjustable spotlights emitting up to 600 lumens with a warm color temperature of 3000 Kelvin, enabling color video recording at night when motion is detected. The non-Pro Spotlight Cam offers a 2K resolution, a 140-degree field of view, and 6× digital zoom, according to a hands-on review.
The new Spotlight cameras integrate AI-powered features, including Smart Video Descriptions, Familiar Faces recognition, and smart video search. These functions are classified as opt-in “Pro features” and require user consent before activation, according to Ring’s support documentation. Smart Video Descriptions automatically generate summaries of camera footage and send text alerts describing detected events, designed to reduce the need for users to watch full video clips. The Familiar Faces feature allows users to label saved faces and enables the system to distinguish known individuals from strangers. However, this facial recognition technology has been linked to ongoing privacy lawsuits involving Ring and Google Nest, as reported in recent legal filings.
Ring also introduced “Search Party,” an AI-powered community feature that uses outdoor Ring cameras to help locate lost dogs by analyzing video footage when a missing pet is reported in the app. This feature, along with others like AI Video Description and Single Event Alerts, is part of a broader AI rollout tied to Ring’s premium subscription plans. Access to advanced AI video search and descriptions requires the subscription, which costs about $20 per month.
Users have control over the AI surveillance features through the Ring app. According to Ring’s official guidance, users must consent to enable AI functions and can toggle each feature on or off individually for each device. Settings for smart video search and related AI options are accessible under Device Settings → Video Settings. Ring allows per-device customization, meaning AI surveillance can be disabled on specific cameras without affecting others. A community guide notes that some AI alert features may require users to close and reopen the app after toggling off to ensure the changes take effect.
Despite these controls, privacy concerns have been raised by users and privacy forums, which report that Amazon and Ring recently auto-enabled multiple AI functionalities, including facial recognition and text extraction, without explicit user consent. This activation covered every motion-triggered event on certain doorbell cameras and included AI Video Description, AI Single Event Alerts, Smart Alerts, Lost Pet and Familiar Faces Search, and Smart Video Search. Unlike the earlier rollout of Search Party in October, which was presented with an opt-out option, the recent activation required users to manually disable AI features on each camera, according to privacy advocates.
In practical use, reviewers have found the AI video descriptions helpful but not infallible. One example cited a misinterpretation where the system described a user playing with sofa cushions when they were actually shaking out rugs. Nonetheless, the AI alerts are generally close enough to inform users about activity without viewing entire clips. The core hardware performance of the cameras, including image quality, field of view, and night illumination, was described as robust even when AI features were disabled.
The Spotlight Cam Pro employs 3D motion detection via a radar sensor, allowing for more precise motion zones but limiting detection range to approximately 25 to 30 feet. This affects how AI-labeled events are captured and filtered. Overall, the new Spotlight cameras provide high-resolution imaging, strong illumination, and rich AI-generated metadata when combined with appropriate subscription plans and settings.
