With the popularity of maxi scooters heading north, more and more manufacturers are bringing in new products to take advantage of this opportunity. While the Indian market has not yet fully opened its arms to these scooters, car brands have had reasonable success overseas in this area.

Yamaha is the newest manufacturer to expand its range of maxi scooters with the introduction of the new Aerox 155 in Thailand. Following in the footsteps of its Japanese counterpart Honda, who unveiled its updated Forza range of scooters a few months ago, the latest version of Aerox 155 offers a number of improvements both mechanically and cosmetically.

Updated design & features

The 2021 Aerox 155 has significant updates to the design, including a dual LED headlight setup consisting of LED daytime running lights and an updated LED taillight. Not only in the design, but also in the Power Scooter, he receives an updated equipment list with a fully digital instrument console that is also equipped Yamaha’s Y-Connect app as standard equipment.

This feature allows drivers to pair their smartphone with the scooter to get a variety of information, including fault codes, maintenance schedules and the last parking spot.

In addition, drivers can manage calls and messages on their console and share details of their journeys with other Y-Connect drivers via the app. Other highlights are engine start-stop, hazard warning lights, keyless start and a 25 liter storage capacity under the seat, accessed via a remote locking button.

It’s more difficult in its dynamics 125 kg dry weight compared to 118 kg of its predecessor and a comfortable saddle height of 790 mm. The suspension tasks are carried out by conventional telescopic forks at the front and two shock absorbers for remote-controlled reservoirs at the rear.

A disc brake on the front wheel and a drum brake on the rear wheel with the help of a single-channel ABS ensure the anchoring. It rolls on 14-inch wheels wrapped in tread tires 110 / 80-14 and 140 / 70-14 at the front and rear. The fuel tank volume has also increased from 4.6 liters to 5.5 liters.

Powertrain & Transmission

Speaking of the powertrain, it is getting an updated, liquid-cooled 155 cc DOHC single-cylinder engine with variable valve actuation (VVA). This is the same engine that powers the R15 V3 in India. On board the scooter, this unit now turns up 15.4 hp at 8,000 rpm and 13.9 Nm at 6,500 rpm compared to its predecessor, which delivered 14.8 hp and 14.4 Nm peak torque. Equipped with electronic fuel injection (EFI), it uses a traditional V-belt CVT to perform transmission tasks.

The new Yamaha Aerox 155 is offered in two variants – standard and ABS at a starting price of 67,500 THB (equivalent to 1.64 lakh INR). Most likely, this scooter will only reach our coast if the Japanese brand decides against its rivals Honda and Aprilia.
