Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh):

A 20-year-old woman was killed on Saturday in the town of Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh when a kite’s “Chinese cord” (rope coated with blown glass) cut her throat, police said.

The incident happened at the Zero Point Bridge, under the boundaries of Madhav Nagar Police Station, when the woman was riding a scooter with a friend, Police Additional Superintendent Ravindra Verma said.

A kite string cut her throat and she bled to death instantly, the officer said, adding that the girl who was on the pillion was safe.

A case was registered and a search was made for the person who flew the kite. Police also scanned CCTV footage of the area, Verma said.

Police will also crack down on the suppliers and sellers of powder glass-coated cord, commonly referred to as “Chinese cord,” the official added.

The line is coated with powdered glass to make it razor sharp and allow it to “cut” other kites flying in the sky.

But every year around the Makar Sankranti festival, incidents are reported of people, especially cyclists, being slashed open, sometimes fatally, by it.

In many places, using such strings is illegal.
