TurboAnt has penetrated the world of personal electric mobility in recent years, starting with the TurboAnt X7. Well, they don’t sit idle for long and came back last year with a reinforced version of the scooter called the TurboAnt X7 Pro that brings some useful new features to the table.
Disclaimer: TurboAnt sent us the X7 Pro free of charge for the purposes of this review.
The main differentiator between the scooters is the Pro’s replaceable, upgradeable 10 Ah battery. This allows owners to unplug the battery for easier charging and safer storage. You can also buy a second battery for even more driving time. Many electric scooters don’t have replaceable batteries that snap into any area where the single battery is good for the life of the vehicle.
For those looking for even more range on a single battery, TurboAnt offers a 12.8 Ah extended range battery ($ 250 option) that offers a little more portability and range per charge. TurboAnt sent us the extended battery together with the scooter and ensured a noticeable increase in range and performance compared to the standard battery.
The ability to replace the battery gives the scooter significant and meaningful functionality. We love the ability to go 15 or 20 miles outside without worrying about how much range the battery has left. It was also helpful to make sure we always had a fully charged battery ready and waited at home. Pulling out the battery for charging is also a nice feature. It’s easy to leave the scooter in the garage or in the side yard and bring the battery inside to charge it without worrying about where the scooter will fit.
Speaking of storage space: The TurboAnt X7 Pro can also be folded flat to simplify storage and transport. Many scooters fold awkwardly and do the job of folding the stem onto the deck, but it creates an uncomfortable mass of batteries and technology that isn’t really easy to store or carry. The TurboAnt X7 Pro does all of this very well and folds up into a compact package that is easy to transport, easy to stow in the trunk of a car, or easy to get on a bus.
When it comes time to actually get a scooter ride, it won’t break new speed records, but that’s not the point. The TurboAnt X7 Pro is a commuter workhorse. That’s what it’s designed for and it absolutely nails that feature. The 350 watt front hub motor is more than capable of moving its cargo through the city at a speed of up to 20 mph.
While driving, the scooter has a unique cruise control function that automatically engages the accelerator pedal after a few seconds. At this point, the scooter will beep to notify the driver that cruise control is activated and the throttle can be released. The scooter then continues this performance until the brake is depressed.
It’s a nice feature for long journeys and makes the scooter a much more pleasant electric vehicle overall. I haven’t seen this on any other electric scooter or e-bike.
Drivers can choose between three modes: Beginner, Eco, and Sport, each with an incrementally higher power output. For most of our drivers, Sport was the go-to-power mode, but it’s nice to have a few options to choose from, for lighter weight drivers who may not need or want the full power of the engine.
As you drive down the street, the center-mounted display makes it easy to see what speed you are traveling at and not much more. This is mainly because you don’t need to know much more on the way. A closer look shows the driving mode and battery capacity.
The 10-inch air-filled tires are also a nice improvement over most other scooters as the pneumatic tires absorb some bumps from the road. It won’t save you from some potholes that tires will swallow, but it’s better than rolling down the road on hard rubber tires.
Overall, the TurboAnt X7 Pro is an adult-sized scooter that is solid value in a world of disposable budget scooters. TurboAnt also offers a sturdy range of replacement parts to ensure owners can find a new engine, engine controller, new battery, or even a new inner tube for the tires in due course. At $ 499.98, the X7 Pro’s current retail price is an easy choice for those looking for an affordable electric scooter.
