Sony will carry PlayStation video games to cell phones as early as 2021

Mobile is quickly becoming the next growth road for giants in the gaming segment. In the past few years, several well-known PC and console game franchises have found their way onto the mobile platform. Some of the best-known success stories are Fortnite, PUBG Mobile, and Call of Duty: Mobile. Microsoft brought its portfolio of Xbox games to mobile phones with xCloud, while Google is trying to get a piece of the pie with Stadia via cloud-based game streaming. Now, Sony has announced plans to bring some legendary PlayStation franchises to smartphones.

Sony wants to expand its audience by bringing the legendary PlayStation IP to mobile phones

During Investor Relation Day, Sony’s PlayStation boss Jim Ryan announced that the company is taking steps to bring PlayStation titles to mobile phones this year. “In 2021 we will also take steps to bring PlayStation IP to mobile devices with the potential to dramatically increase the audience size associated with it,” said Ryan. You can hear him talk about it on the webcast recording here at 10:25 PM.

“In Fiscal Year 21, we will begin releasing some of our legendary PlayStation IPs on mobile devices. We assume this will not bring a significant profit flow in 2021. However, we expect to learn from these experiences and increase the number of titles we publish on mobile devices, the PC and mobile phone contribution will become increasingly important over time. “

According to a report by VideoGameChronicles, the Sony Executive plans to move the extensive catalog of its first-party IP to the mobile platform. Sony has some well-known names under its belt such as “God of War”, “The Last Of Us” and “Uncharted” which, if well performed, could be a huge hit on the mobile platform. However, the company has yet to announce which games it plans to bring to the mobile ecosystem.

While cloud-based game streaming is bringing the console experience to mobile devices, it’s still limited in its reach and hasn’t really exploded despite the appeal of playing AAA games on your phone or tablet. However, porting these games to Android and iOS ensures that they are easily accessible and better optimized without many restrictions.
