Security considerations about utilizing e-scooters in Windsor

A city council has raised concerns about the safety of electric scooters in Windsor, adding that people walking around town need to jump out of their way.

The issue was discussed at a virtual meeting of the Windsor Town Forum held yesterday (Wednesday).

Government trials are underway in nearby Slough allowing people to legally rent the scooters as they have been taxed and insured like a vehicle by the leasing company.

But Cllr David Cannon (Con, Datchet, Horton and Wraysbury) asked Jeff Pick, who works in communications with the Thames Valley Police (TVP), what action has been taken against people riding them illegally in the Royal Borough where they are not Case is in operation.

“It’s a question that keeps coming up,” said Cllr Cannon. “The residents have to jump out of the way on footpaths and sidewalks very regularly.

“What does the Force do in this context because there doesn’t seem to be any concern among the people who use it that they will be caught.”

Mr Pick called the situation “difficult” and added that TVP was waiting for further instructions from the government that would “come out” regarding the use of e-scooters.

He added that the parish could try to ban their use entirely, as recently done by a parish council in Torbay, Devon.

“We’ll probably have to move on to something like this,” said Pick. “It’s a difficult problem, it’s right in front of us right now. Look at this room. “

Mr Pick also said that these e-scooters are often very difficult to identify, making it harder to catch and educate the drivers.

In a recent TVP operation in Slough, officials issued more than 30 warnings to e-scooter drivers in the city who were not aware of the rules for using them.

The subject of the Alexandra bus and car park in Windsor was also discussed at the Wednesday meeting.

The local council wants to look into the possibility of redeveloping this site, which has raised concerns that some nearby green spaces may be earmarked for development.

Council Chairman Cllr Andrew Johnson vowed that popular green spaces near Baths Island would be protected from any construction. Read more about it here.
