Oppo Discover X3 Professional Digicam Deep Dive: The microscope mode affords a novel recording expertise

The Oppo Find X3 Pro, see Sandra Vogel’s full review, is available now and offers some interesting camera features that I’ve been testing for a few weeks. Sandra gave the Find X3 Pro a rating of 8.5 / 10, and I totally agree with that assessment.

In addition to all of the great smartphone features on the Find X3 Pro, the rear quad camera system is interesting as it opens up a new area for creativity while also offering more color support than native Android code. Oppo has worked hard to deliver a compelling camera experience through hardware and software. While Sandra noted the camera’s huge lead as a disadvantage, I’m a fan of the sleek way the glass bottom blends up and into the camera array.

There are four cameras on the back of the Oppo Find X3 Pro. Starting at the top right and going clockwise we have the following:

  • Ultra-wide (top right): 50 MP Sony IMX 766 sensor with 1 / 1.56-inch sensor size, f / 2.2 aperture, 110.3 degree field of view and omnidirectional PDAF
  • Wide (bottom right): 50 MP Sony IMX 766 sensor with 1 / 1.56-inch sensor size, f / 1.8 aperture, OIS and omnidirectional PDAF
  • Tele (bottom left): 13 MP with f / 2.4 aperture, 5x optical hybrid zoom and 20x digital zoom
  • Microlens (top left): 3MP microlens with 1: 3.0 aperture, 60x magnification and FHD video recording

While we see other phones with a quad camera arrangement on the back, Oppo added a twist to the micro lens camera. We also see that Oppo provides macro mode without a special macro lens, as explained below.

Microscope mode

The micro lens camera is unique to the Oppo Find X3 Pro and it is pretty amazing to capture objects that cannot be seen with the naked eye. When you shoot subjects with this lens, you discover another dimension of common subjects. This camera opens up a world of creativity.

Once you have this mode activated, you need to get very close to the subject and also hold a steady hand. The focus distance is approx. 3mm. You may be luckier with a tripod, but I was able to capture content even with a freehand approach. You may also find that you can put an edge of the phone on your subject or object around the subject and take some interesting pictures.

To illuminate the microscope, Find X3 Pro has a sapphire lens and a ring light as external components of the microlens camera. If you activate this mode, you will immediately know which lens needs to be aligned on your subject when the ring around the camera glass lights up.

Take a look at the embedded image gallery in turn as I will show the close up image first and then an image of what is provided in microscope mode. The microlens camera takes square pictures with a resolution of 1944 x 1944 pixels.

RawPlus

When you switch to expert mode, also known as manual mode, there is an option for RawPlus in the RAW options panel. With RawPlus enabled, you can capture HDR content with 10-bit color support. In this mode you can work with more image data to optimize your results.

Movie mode

Slide it into the camera software and select More. Tap Film Mode to switch to a film mode that supports capturing billions of colors. The phone’s 10-bit capabilities are supported here with support for 4K video, HDR, log, and BT.2020 color gamut.

Movie mode also gives you quick access to full manual control of ISO, white balance, shutter speed and focus. OIS and EIS support is also offered. I would have loved to see LG’s cool point zoom feature to turn this camera into a real movie camera.

Mark AI Video

Artificial intelligence is commonplace on smartphones these days, but the crucial aspect is how well manufacturers use the power of AI. On the Oppo Find X3 Pro we see an AI button in video mode. Similar to the AI feature in Photos, which optimizes camera settings for the scene, the AI Highlight Video mode detects scenes and then automatically manages HDR, Night Mode, Audio Zoom, and Ultra-Stable Stabilization so you can focus on capturing your content can.

AI palettes

People enjoy exploring and developing their creativity. The AI Palettes option supports custom selection of one of your images, which you can then set as a color filter and apply to other photos in your collection.

In the Photos app, tap a picture, choose Edit, swipe to AI Palettes, tap the plus icon, then choose a photo as a color filter. You can then apply this custom filter to other images in your collection. With such custom functions, you can probably create images that are unique in the world.

The Oppo Find X3 Pro offers numerous functions and features, including the tripod button in night mode, support for bokeh videos, advanced settings and much more.
