Midwest Radio – Strategic Roads Committee is contemplating pilot e-scooter for Mayo

A pilot project for e-scooters for Mayo is being examined by members of the district’s Strategic Roads Committee.

Bird, a company that operates shared public e-scooters around the world, recently gave committee members a rundown of what’s achievable in the cities of Mayo.

While the use of e-scooters in public spaces in Ireland is currently illegal, the legislation is expected to change this summer.

Tristan Mak, Senior Operations Associate at Bird, explained how scooters are placed in public areas and accessed through an app so a person can begin their journey.

Local teams collect, load and repair the scooters and use them in park nests on the street. The range of one charge is 30 to 40 kilometers.

Tristan explained that there is a driver training program. When you sign up to use the e-scooter, you will need to complete a safety tutorial.

Answering questions from the city council, Charlotte Bailey, general manager for the UK and Ireland, said Bird was fully responsible for the insurance.

As for the price, she said there is an activation fee of € 1 and then 15 cents per minute.

Most trips cost € 2 to € 3.
