Edmonton’s first e-scooter enforcement flash sees 17 tickets, 100+ alerts – Edmonton

Multiple tickets were issued over the long May weekend in Edmonton and dozens of warnings about improper use of e-scooters were issued.

For the first time since electric scooters arrived in the city in 2019, a dedicated law enforcement officer had peace officers looking for people to drive electric scooters in places where they are not allowed.

Edmonton will be running the first ever electric scooter enforcement flash this weekend

Enforcement involved a combination of educating users about the rules and issuing tickets in cases where officials deemed it necessary.

Enforcement between Friday and Monday focused on downtown, Old Strathcona and the river valley, where e-scooter use is highest.

During those four days, the city said it issued 127 warnings and issued 17 tickets for illegally driving e-scooters on sidewalks, which came with a $ 100 fine.

There are three companies licensed to operate in the city this year: Bird Canada, Lime, and Newcomer Spin Mobility, which is owned by Ford Motor Company.

The service areas for the scooters encompass the core of the city – downtown, Oliver and parts of Westmount on the north side of the river, and the Old Strathcona and University of Alberta areas to the south.

Scooters must stay within the above limits. Outside of them, the scooters slow down and the brakes apply.
