Multi-Drone Mapping: Teal Drones and Reveal Technology Demonstrate for US Military
Red Cat Holdings subsidiary Teal Drones announced a partnership with Reveal Technology in order to equip Reveal’s “Farsight” mapping software with the ability to generate high-fidelity 3D maps by autonomously joining imagery from multiple unmanned aerial systems (UAS). This significantly accelerates the rate of production, providing users with access to maps and analytics much more quickly, as was recently demonstrated to US Army Special Operations Command near Fort Bragg.
FAA Drone Research Awards: $2.7 million for Disaster Preparedness, Emergency Response
$2.7 million has been granted to 5 universities in FAA drone research awards, which will support work on leveraging drone technology for disaster preparedness and emergency response. For years now, drones have proven to be invaluable in search and rescue, firefighting, mapping of flood areas, and other disaster response efforts. Now, the FAA is supporting research institutions as they study how best to deploy and coordinate drone use in emergencies.
Researchers Help Underwater Drones Detect Ocean Contaminants, Like Oil Spills or Gas Leaks
The US Navy has awarded Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) researchers Nikolaos Gatsonis and Michael Demetriou with $347,843 for the development of a computational model utilizing data from a system of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) or underwater drones to provide real-time evaluations of the concentration and source of a contaminant liquid or gas plume as it circulates throughout the ocean. Upon being deployed on an AUV network, the estimator could assist in determining responses to chemical or biological threats, accidents, and environmental disasters.

New York Power Authority Will Use Drones for Power Line Inspections: Enabled by ANRA Software
The New York Power Authority will use drones for power line inspections, and airspace management leader ANRA Technologies has been chosen to provide the New York Power Authority (NYPA) with its MissionManager Software as part of a five-year contract. This new agreement will see ANRA equip NYPA with technology enabling the deployment of robotics for use in conducting transmission line inspections and observation required for power restoration following weather events. Mission Manager will help NYPA reach the goals it set in its VISION 2030 strategic plan, as well as aid in the advancement of New York’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act clean energy agenda.
Meet Avata, DJI’s Newest FPV Drone
DJI on August 25 introduced its newest model drone, the DJI Avata, a rugged first-person view FPV drone, designed for both beginner and experienced UAV pilots. DJI’s new FPV drone is packed with features and available now. The compact design of the Avata, DJI’s second foray into the world of FPV drones, strips down the chassis of a traditional drone into a body built for speed and agility. The Avata weighs only 410 grams and incorporates safety features, such as built-in aerodynamic propeller guards and a turtle mode, which flips the drone upright in the case of an upside-down landing.
