TikTok sale to Walmart and Oracle stopped
Let’s focus our attention on TikTok which had a very interesting end of 2020. If you remember, the company signed a deal with Oracle and Walmart back in September to avoid the US ban on them. The deal was approved by the administration, but when the sale deadline came on December 4th, the government gave them no response, so the deal was suspended in a kind of limbo. Now it looks like the new president of the United States has other plans. According to the Wall Street Journal, TikTok’s contract with Oracle and Walmart has been “indefinitely” suspended. Apparently, the new president is reviewing previous efforts based on dealing with security risks faced by Chinese tech companies. Now officials haven’t ruled anything out yet, but it looks like the sale won’t take place at all. However, the new government may have to make a decision pretty soon as it is due to provide a formal response before February 18 as part of TikTok’s lawsuit. We’ll see how this plays out next week as we know they might sell or just make changes to the app and algorithm you use to recommend videos as they aren’t selling.
The first signs of a Samsung Galaxy S21 FE, also known as Fan Edition, have surfaced
When we returned to Samsung a few weeks ago, we set out how the company may already be working on the S21 FE, but that was some kind of range and most likely just an LTE variant of the S21. However, we have a new report from SamMobile that lists the model number of a new Samsung device that supposedly belongs to the S21 Fan Edition. The report now mentions that Samsung has not yet launched any LTE variants of its flagships. So they assume that they are just trying to streamline things by putting this Galaxy S21 FE model number in line with the rest of the Galaxy S21 models, basically to throw us off. Now it’s pretty early in the year compared to the S20 FE, but we expect this phone’s specs to include Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 870, a camera similar to the Galaxy S21 Trio, 5G, and of course a high refresh rate AMOLED display. The report also mentions that Samsung could go the same route by offering a wide variety of bright color options to market in the same way it did last fall. So let’s hope we get this phone soon as the S20 FE was a great choice last year.
We can expect this from Apple’s new mixed reality headset
Let’s move on to Cupertino for the rest of the show, starting with the upcoming Mixed Reality headset, as we’ve had a ton of leaks over the past 2 weeks. Now we have some new patents for this headset that were published yesterday. Listed as a “Head-Mounted Display Unit with Customizable Facial Interface”, this headset explains how the design elements can keep the headset from moving when the person moves while providing a comfortable fit. Now there’s a lot of jargon going on here, so there appears to be at least an eye-tracking camera, a lighting source that emits infrared light to the user’s eyes, and a diffraction grating in the eyepieces. Other details mention over a dozen cameras to achieve eye tracking, as well as the 8K displays to make everything look as good as possible. Another picture in the patents shows that this could work in a way by Tony Stark, where a 3D text generation and editing GUI is displayed in a virtual room that contains a virtual screen on which you can type text into documents can enter or edit via a keyboard from the input device. Apparently, the text document or text area can be placed in your 3D virtual space and moved to different depths. Very Michael Fisher Iron Man, if you ask me. We should be expecting this headset as early as next year and should be priced at $ 3000 to compete with Microsoft’s solution. For the hottest news today, let’s talk about Apple Leaks as we have some products due. This morning Jon Prosser went on a reply and tweeting outing where he gave us some new information about when to expect some things. Let’s get the iPhone 13 out of the way first, as someone asked him if Touch ID was still available on iPhones this year and Prosser simply replied “Yup”. Moving on to other products and their launch dates, he tweeted that AirTags, which have been ready for months, will be launched in March. Of course, this isn’t set in stone, but he claims that his sources didn’t mention any further delays this time around. That said, it should finally be a closed deal. Speaking of March, someone asked him about a new iPad Pro, and Prosser replied that, as far as he knows, we should expect it in March as well. To expand on these products, we expect the AirTags to be tile-like staplers that you can use to keep track of your belongings. And yes, you will most likely have to clip them to a third-party accessory to carry them around. When it comes to the iPad, we expect a similar design to the current iPad Pro with the dual camera on the back, boxy design, and Face ID, and we really hope this is the debut of mini-LED displays. Finally, for the iPhone 13, we expect a shorter notch, Touch ID, and updated cameras for all 4 models this year.
