Apple finally presented the long-rumored AirTags at its Spring Loaded event on April 20, along with the purple iPhone in the latest iPhone range. It’s essentially an extension of Apple’s Find My app. If you’ve misplaced your item and it’s within Bluetooth range, you can use the Find My app to play a sound from the AirTag to help you find it. You can also put AirTag in lost mode and be notified when it is in range or found by the extensive Find My network. However, there is still some confusion about what you can track with AirTags. Can you use it to track people or pets? Or is it limited to articles?
Apple AirTags are used to keep track of items. You can attach the AirTags to key rings, backpacks, purses and much more. However, they are not designed to track people and pets. Kaiann Drance, Vice President of Worldwide iPhone Product Marketing at Apple, and Ron Huang, Senior Director of Sensing and Connectivity at Apple, emphasized in an interview with Fast Company that the tracker was not designed to track people or pets, but rather focuses on objects.
So it seems to be the answer to the question, “Can I track people with an AirTag?” is no.
With a single Apple ID, you can track up to 16 items with AirTags
They said if you need to keep track of your child as a parent, better to use an Apple Watch with family setup. If you want to attach AirTags to pet collars on pets, you must ensure that the pet is within range of a device on the Find My Network to determine its exact location. However, Apple doesn’t suggest using AirTags in a pet collar. That said, it understands that at some point people will. So it is a good move to establish some ground rules.
According to Apple, the setup for AirTags is similar to AirPods. Here’s how you can set up your AirTag:
- Find the Find My app on your compatible iPhone or iPad.
- Pair your AirTag with your iPhone by bringing it near your iPhone and it should connect.
- Follow the on-screen steps to name your new item.
- Register it with your Apple ID.
- You should now see the AirTag under Items in the app as it is now paired.
- Now you can attach the AirTag to any object you want to track.
What if I lose my AirTag item?
Once you’ve set up an AirTag, it’ll appear on the New Items tab in the My Search app. Here you can view the current or last known location of the item on a map. If you lose your item and it’s within Bluetooth range, you can use the Find My app to play a sound from the AirTag to help you find it. You can also ask Siri to find your item. The AirTag will beep when it is nearby.
What if the AirTag is out of Bluetooth range? Well, Apple figured that out too. If you lose an AirTag device and it is out of Bluetooth range, the Find My network can help locate it. It can detect Bluetooth signals from a lost AirTag and send the location back to its owner.
If someone finds a lost AirTag, they can tap it with their iPhone or NFC-enabled device and be redirected to a website that will display a contact phone number for the owner if they provided one.
