A man was dropping off a rental car at Metropolitan Rentals on Dominion Road last week when another man pulled up in a white van and tried to steal his electric scooter.

Security cameras have recorded the attempted theft on Dominion Road and the footage is now on social media. The man who posted is hoping it will remind owners to lock their scooters securely.

The man who posted the footage on the Auckland subreddit told the Herald his friend was planning to bring the truck and scooter home.

“He actually saw the guys acting dodgy outside, so he watched and kept an eye on his scooter. It’s pretty unique, one in five in New Zealand and expensive, $ 4,500 I think.”

His friend acted quickly and was able to get his scooter out of the van when one of the men tried to drive off.

The video ends with the man pulling his scooter out of the back of the van and trying to track down the thieves who escaped.

According to the man, the attempted theft was reported to the police.

“They were able to get the license plate from different angles at Metro Rentals. They reported to the police and they pointed out that the numbers had been stolen.”

He posted the video to “raise awareness” of how thieves target electric scooters and “do it in the van and grab and walk.”

“Get a good, sturdy lock and use it and keep an eye on your scooter, don’t leave it unattended,” the man warned others.
