KEMAMAN: Rapid action by members of the Civil Defense (APM) saved the lives of two friends in their twenties after the motorcycle they were on was swept away on a flooded street in Jalan Ibok this afternoon.
Kemaman’s civil protection officer Mohd Suhaimi Awang @ Muhammad said that the Yamaha ego scooter was swept away by strong currents.
He said his men were monitoring the flooding in the Ibok area when they saw the two friends in trouble.
“One of the victims managed to save himself while the other was stuck in a tree. An APM member then tied a rope around his body and swam against the strong currents to save the victim, ”he said.
Today, a Perodua Myvi, driven by an officer at 10 Kampung Batu near the exit of Chukai Toll Plaza, was swept away, but was rescued by a father and son who lived nearby.
The Terengganu Civil Protection Secretariat reported that 5,900 evacuees from 1,527 families were housed in 44 makeshift relief centers across the state at 10:00 p.m. today.
They come from four districts – Kemaman, which has been hardest hit with 4,962 evacuees, Hulu Terenggganu, Setiu and Dungun.
