It has long been rumored that OnePlus is working on a “Lite” smartphone with slightly watered-down specs compared to its vanilla “flagship killers”, but those rumors have been proven wrong year after year. Instead of launching a “Lite” device, the ambitions of the OnePlus budget smartphone were realized in the form of the OnePlus Nord family. But according to a new report, OnePlus could finally take over the ‘Lite’ train next year with the launch of the OnePlus 9 Lite. The OnePlus 9 series is slated to take cover in March, so we’ll likely come across more details the day before the launch event.
Expect some limitations in camera functionality and build quality
According to Android Central, the OnePlus 9 Lite will debut alongside the OnePlus 9 and its more powerful Pro sibling. This is the second big change in OnePlus’ core strategy for smartphones. The company switched to a two-product system in 2019 when it launched the OnePlus 7 Pro alongside the OnePlus 7, and is apparently pushing the approach into a three-phone strategy. Unfortunately, details of the OnePlus 9 Lite’s internal hardware or design attributes are not yet known, apart from the SoC that powers it.
According to the report, the OnePlus 9 Lite will be equipped with the Snapdragon 865 SoC That can be found in most of the 2020 flagship Android devices. Now, given Qualcomm’s newest flagship – the Snapdragon 888 – the aforementioned SoC may be a year old, but it can easily handle any task you ask it and will do so for at least another year. The SoC choice isn’t surprising as OnePlus will be cutting back on the cost of making the OnePlus 9T.
We can assume that the OnePlus 9 Lite has at least three or even four rear cameras if the budget-conscious OnePlus Nord is a good choice. Another important area in which OnePlus is likely to make some concessions is in using lower quality building materials and foregoing some other tricks reserved for high-end smartphones, such as: B. wireless charging. Pricing information is also currently absent, but OnePlus will likely position the OnePlus 9T in the same price range where the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE and Google Pixel 5 have achieved some laurels.
