As expected, today’s news starts with deals that keep getting better, even if there is no particular reason for it. Starting with Amazon, the M1 Mac Mini is still $ 100 cheaper, at 800 for the 512 gigs of the SSD variant. Both Amazon and B&H have the Galaxy S21 Ultra for $ 200 discount, the entry-level version for 999. B&H also has the regular S21 for $ 150 discount and 699 for 256 GB of storage. Of course, if you’re looking for a Samsung device and have an older phone to trade in, the spring deals don’t stop there. They leave the S21 for $ 100, the S21 + for $ 300, or the Ultra for $ 500 if you have a trade-in device. Finally, Amazon has the Apple Watch Series 6 for $ 65 off, so it ships at 320. We have more deals on iPads, other Samsung devices, and more under the links in the description.
Let’s put the spotlight on Google and the Google Pixel 5 security patch in April. I know it sounds strange, but you will understand. In case you missed it, the Pixel 5 actually lagged behind other phones with the Snapdragon 765G last year when it was released. Well, most of those numbers come from AnAndTech and show how the Pixel 5 performed against the competition. Well, someone who works for them has just confirmed that they ran the tests again and after this security patch, the published results for Pixel 5 will be doubled. That means it’s now in line or even better than other 765G smartphones, but of course it took 6 months to get there. If you’re a gamer and have a Pixel 5, this update is for you. So be sure to download it. All I can say is that I never really noticed any bad performance, but hey, we’re about a week away from the Sony Xperia event. Last week we covered some leaked specs and renders for the Xperia 1 Mark III, and now some new case renders give us further confirmation of that design. These pictures are from Fallmacher Olixar and show the design we saw last week. We see the 4K HDR OLED display that supposedly supports 120Hz, but we don’t know the size yet. On the back, we see the triple camera array, which will reportedly consist of a 64-megapixel main sensor, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide sensor, and a 12-megapixel periscope telephoto lens that appears to be 60x can zoom. In these pictures we see the phone in a gray colorway and they even showed the Xperia 10 Mark III, which looks a bit similar but has a less impressive camera module. Other specifications include the Snapdragon 888 5G, up to 16 GB of RAM, up to 512 GB of storage and a 5000 mAh battery. So yeah, we’ll see what Sony announces on April 14th. And yes, of course we have to talk about what happened to LG. There have been tons of reports over the past few months claiming that LG could shut down its smartphone division. Well, almost at midnight on Monday, they announced that they were officially closing their phone business. If you are unfamiliar with the matter, the shutdown is expected to be completed by July 31st, but of course some inventory will still be available after that. Apparently they even want to roll out an Android 12 update for those of you who are keeping your phones according to a support page discovered by XDA developers, but we don’t have any details on which phones are supported yet. Yes, in their statement, the company mentions that they will focus on 6G, electric vehicles, smart homes, robotics, AI and other projects. Even though they haven’t had the best in the past few years, it’s still sad to say that LG Mobile is gone now that they have put so much on the market. The LG G4 is still one of my favorite cameras on a phone, and the G6 and V30 are my favorite designs. And finally, for the hottest news today, let’s talk about the elephant in the room. These iPhone 13 models. Every year we get some 3D mockups of the upcoming iPhones, usually made for Casemaker to start designing their cases, but this year we finally have something different. One of the biggest stories over the past few months has been that we’re finally going to get a smaller notch, rearranging the FaceID components and moving the eartip up. Well, these MacOtakara models pretty much confirm that. That being said, like the other leaks claim, we should expect the same design with the triple camera module on the back as well as the LiDAR sensor, lightning connector, and speakers at the bottom. And after multiple leaks, it looks like we’re standing in line for an S year with the major improvements coming in-house, but we can expect camera hardware upgrades when it comes to the lenses and some new colorways like matte black and bronze, but, no major design changes. So the leak cycle is early this year and all the information we got.
