AirPods are widely used as they are commonly known as the best audio device for iPhones, because they “just work”. But like any electronic device, especially those that rely on Bluetooth, they are not immune to errors. They can cause connectivity issues, resulting in lower volume playback or audio out of sync. So it can be useful to know how to factory reset your AirPods, and this guide lists the steps to do just that, be it the AirPods, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max.

How to reset AirPods or AirPods Pro

Start by placing your AirPods in their charging case and closing the lid. Apple’s official guide suggests waiting 30 seconds after this step. Now unfold the top of your charging case and follow the steps listed below.

Before you begin, make sure you’ve removed them all Accessories on the AirPods Case that could block access to its reset button.

Steps to reset AirPods Pro

  • Open the Settings app and access the Bluetooth section.
  • Click the “i” icon next to your AirPods, click Forget this device and confirm your decision.
  • Now, with the lid open, press and hold the setup button on the back of the AirPods case for 15 seconds until the status light on the front flashes yellow and then white.

After following the steps above, you can Reconnect your AirPods to your device by bringing it near your phone, opening the lid and following the on-screen instructions.

Note: Resetting your AirPods will erase any custom controls that you have configured.

How to reset AirPods Max

To reset your AirPods Max, take it out of its smart cover and follow the steps below. However, if you don’t feel like resetting your headphones and not having to reconfigure their settings, you can also try restarting them by pressing and holding the Sound Control button and the Digital Crown until the LED on the earcup flashes amber.

If this didn’t fix any of your problems, press and hold the buttons for 15 seconds until the amber light turns white, which indicates the AirPods have reset.

Note: Apple recommends charging your AirPods Max for a few minutes before attempting to reset the device.
