Harlem globetrotter Shane ‘Scooter’ Christensen attends Milton Hershey Faculty

The Harlem Globetrotters are coming to the Giant Center on February 13, but as a bit of an upfront surprise, team member Shane “Scooter” Christensen stopped by the Milton Hershey School to teach elementary school students some tricks and life lessons.

A pep rally was held at the school’s Spartan Center around 2:00 p.m. Monday, where Christensen put on a show for the students to show them not just some of the skills he had learned in his 18 years at Globetrotters, but them also to leave some messages .

Christensen said he believes that in addition to having fun, he wants to teach children the importance of values and morals from a young age. One of his areas of focus for the Milton Hershey School kids on Monday was perseverance, emphasizing never giving up even when faced with a challenge.

“I know a lot of kids mistake effort for failure, but it’s not. … It’s a learning experience. You learn from your mistakes, come back, get better and try again,” he said. “We were just kids like them at one point in our lives and they can see that if we could, they could do it, just to give them some confidence.”

Scooter has been running this type of events for a long time and is happy to share his experiences with students. Knowing he’s influenced several children across the country is something he said the Globetrotters have his back on.

“I always tell people you never remember the score and don’t worry about the score, we’re going to win,” he said. “The kid would always remember, ‘Oh, he gave me this high five,’ or ‘He took me to the court and we danced,’ or something like that. They will remember that for the rest of their lives.”

“I always tell them to find something they’re passionate about,” he said. “There are many good things in this world and you can do anything you want to do, but find something you’re passionate about, put in a lot of effort and do your best.”

The Harlem Globetrotters will host a revamped show titled “The Spread Show” on February 13 at 1:00 p.m. at the Giant Center in Hershey. Tickets can be purchased at ticketmaster.com or at hersheyentertainment.com
