Eight wonderful Apple AirPods suggestions and methods it is advisable to know

Apple’s AirPods were first launched in 2016 and have been derided for their uncanny resemblance to electric toothbrush heads. They are now in the third generation and are … well, everywhere. Do you want to get the most out of your Apple headphones? Then we have some great AirPods tips and tricks you should know.

The AirPods have a lot going for them – a statement that we expand on in our AirPods 3 review and AirPods Pro review – but one thing they don’t have is buttons. This means that a little know-how goes a long way when it comes to getting to grips with the AirPods and doing things like customizing their controls, connecting to an Android phone, and more.

There is so much more to AirPods than just the satisfying click when their case snaps shut. So read on as we reveal nine amazing AirPods tips and tricks to help you get more out of the shiny Apple earbuds.

1) How to rename your AirPods

Your AirPods aren’t really yours until you’ve given them a memorable nickname. Just go to on the iPhone or iPad they’re paired with Settings> Bluetooth then tap the ‘i’ info icon next to your AirPods and finally Tap the existing name.

You can now rename your AirPods however you want! Just keep in mind that it may be visible to other people in your area, so the handle ‘XxXSatanSpawn420XxX’ is best kept in the comparatively anonymous area of Steam.

2) Find the best fit for your AirPods Pro

The regular AirPods are one size fits all, but the higher quality AirPods Pro come with three sets of tips in sizes Small, Medium and Large. You can see which is which by unrolling the edge of the tip and looking for an S, M, or L mark on the inside.

Apple suggests starting with the middle option and then increasing or decreasing the size depending on how secure the fit feels, which makes perfect sense. But you can get even better by using the earplug fit test available for iOS 13.2 and above.

To begin, go to Settings> Bluetooth then on your device tap the ‘i’ info button to the right of your AirPods Pro under “My Devices”. Now, Tap on “Earplug Fit Test”, followed by ‘Continue’. Then make sure you have your AirPods Pro installed press start ‘.

Apple’s software will do the rest and tell you whether the earbuds seal well or not. If it could be better, you will be asked to tweak the tips or try a different size – you may need one for one ear and another for the other.

Keep testing until you get the Good Seal Nick for both ears, and then enjoy your AirPods Pro as Apple intended, with fully optimized noise cancellation, richer bass, and more.

3) Find out who is calling

Answering calls on your AirPods is very easy – just double-tap over the stem to answer and do the same to hang up. Still, it would be nice to know that calling Colin from university is crazy before engaging in an hour-long catch-up, right?

Go to Settings> Phone> Announce Calls, and Select ‘Headphones Only’. Siri will now announce who is calling on your ear before they “end a friendship?” Opportunity. Okay, the last bit we might have from Black Mirror.

4) How to See AirPods Battery Life

Without a battery indicator on the AirPods case, it can be easy to drain them to ruinous levels for the ride. Fortunately, there are a few ways you can get a quick health checkup.

Open your AirPod’s case and you’ll get a pop-up battery update on your iPhone. If you’ve turned on Siri, you can double-tap an AirPod and say “Battery Percentage” to update it. And if you’ve installed the battery widget in your iPhone’s Today view (swipe left on the home screen, then down to edit), you can see the battery level with a flick of your finger.

Apple Watch owners can also do a simple podcast check: just open Control Center by swiping up from the bottom of the screen, then tap the battery icon to see how close your AirPods are to death.

5) Find her hiding place

Did you check in on the key rack or on the side of the sofa? Oh dear, maybe you left your AirPods in the gym after all.

Fortunately, there is a way to check this out. Once you’ve set up Find My iPhone (in Settings> iCloud), you can go to the Find iPhone app and see the current or last known location of your AirPods on a map.

If they are found to be actually hiding around your house, tap Actions to hear an SOS beep. For poor souls who have only lost one of their AirPods, there is even the option of producing this sound from just one of the earphones. ‘I’m in the washing machine, you idiot!’

6) Optimize your taps – and use transparency mode

Apple’s old-school EarPods may have pesky cords, but those cords have handy buttons for controlling your music. Not so complacent anymore, are we AirPods?

In fact, Apple’s wireless headphones perform similar controls hidden in their “double-tap” settings. Go to Settings> Bluetooth, then tap the “i” next to your Airpods.

You will now see a “double tap on AirPod” menu in which you can give your left or right AirPod “Play / Pause”, “Next track” or “Previous track”.

Probably the coolest function of the AirPods Pro is already integrated – the transparency mode. Simply hold the handle of the AirPods Pro to turn active noise cancellation on and off. So you can occasionally chat with the outside world and hopefully not miss your boarding announcement because you are disturbing at Wetherspoons airport.

7) Introduce them to the Apple family

The Airpods are of course more interested in chatting with other Apple devices through other devices. This means that there are a few little shortcuts to connect to your Watch, Apple TV, or Mac.

To pair them with an Apple Watch, all you have to do is swipe up from the bottom of the screen, then tap the Airplay icon to bring up the Airpods option. On Apple TV, just press the Play / Pause button on the Siri remote while the case is open to bring up the Airpods as an audio source.

And to connect them to your Mac, click the volume up icon in the menu bar and choose Airpods in “Output Device”.

8) How to Use AirPods with Your Android Phone

Do you want to use your AirPods with an Android phone? Make sure the Airpods are in their case, open the lid, then press and hold the button on the back of the case until the white light starts flashing. Now they are in pairing mode, you should now see the Airpods in the bluetooth menu.

Thanks to the free AirpodsforGA app, you can also call up the Google Assistant instead of Siri with a double tap.
