The news was recently confirmed by a tweet from Tarun Mehta, CEO and co-founder of Ather Energy. The tweet said, “The last ather is rolling out of our first plant in Whitefield, Bangalore. It’s amazing what the teams have done. From battling to produce 7 vehicles / day to 75 / shift! Now look forward to our next chapter of Hosur! ” “”
The company began manufacturing Ather electric scooters at the Bangalore manufacturing facility in Whitefield. Initially, the company managed to produce just seven vehicles a day.
However, with the continuous optimization of the manufacturing and assembly process, the number is increased to 75 units per shift. While this is a significant increase from the original numbers, it is not enough to meet the ever-growing demand for Ather electric scooters in the country.
As a result, the company announced that it would move production to a new, larger facility in Hosur, Tamilnadu. According to the company’s report, the new facility will be spread over 4,000,000 square feet and is expected to produce 100,000 units per year and be scalable to half a million units.
The company recently received new funding of $ 35 million. The investment round was led by Sachin Bansal and supported by Hero MotoCorp. The funds will be used for the brand’s upcoming rapid expansion across the country.
The establishment of an electric vehicle manufacturing plant in Tamilnadu will be eligible for a range of incentives recently announced by the state government. This includes 100 percent electricity tax exemption, stamp tax exemption on land purchases, electric vehicle tax exemption and much more.
The company recently announced that its flagship 450X electric scooter will be available in 27 cities by Q1 2021. It will be part of the brand’s Phase 2 expansion in the country. The company has fast-forwarded its Phase 1 expansion plan, announcing the launch of the Ather 450X in 16 new cities across the country.
The company will enter each city in stages until the first quarter of 2021. First, test drives are set up so that consumers can experience the vehicle. In addition, Ather has spoken to potential retail partners to set up the Ather Grid fast EV charging system. The company currently has over 60 public charging stations installed in 11 different cities.
Thoughts on Ather electric scooter production ending at Bangalore plant
The Ather electric scooter is a premium offering in this segment and has been well received in the country. The company is currently selling the scooter in a few cities. However, the demand for electric scooters is increasing across the country. As a result, the company decided to ramp up production and move to a larger manufacturing facility.
