Apple will say goodbye to mini iPhones in 2022: Kuo

Well, it looks like Apple will be done with a “mini” in just two years. The iPhone 12 Mini has been hailed by many other names as “the best compact phone” and “the compact iPhone you’ve wanted in years,” but sales performance told a different story. And it seems Apple wasn’t too happy about it. According to TFI Securities Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, there won’t be a 5.4-inch mini iPhone next year, at least not in the iPhone 14 core lineup.

Apple will be releasing an iPhone 13 Mini, but it will be a mini-tier swan song

“We assume that the new 2H22 iPhone will have 4 models, namely the high-end models 6.7” and 6.1 “and the models 6.7” and 6.1 “at the lower end”, Kuo was quoted in a study note (via iMore). Apple is apparently aiming for a uniform size with the iPhone 14 The Pro models are available in 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch flavors, while the cheaper variants will also be available in 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch sizes next year. iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max maybe?

Why didn’t the iPhone 12 Mini just sell as many devices as Apple had hoped? As early as January, it was reported that Apple was reducing orders for the iPhone 12 Mini and boosting production of the iPhone 12 Pro due to higher demand for the latter. And last month Nikkei Asia reported that IPhone 12 Mini sales were far lower than Apple originally expectedand that it would affect the production run at the end of 2021.

Why did the iPhone 12 Mini fail?

Apple misjudged how many people enjoy viewing content on phones.

The Mini is a great idea in the field and for reviewers who don’t have to pay for it and can use it as a SECOND phone.

As for the reasons, there are many. Yes, the iPhone 12 Mini is $ 100 cheaper than the iPhone 12, even though it has the same camera and SoC. However, battery life was a big issue for the tiny phone. In addition, despite its sharpness and brightness, the 5.4-inch OLED display is not particularly suitable for consuming content, especially when playing games with many on-screen buttons. Apple also appears to have failed in assessing the reality of the phone market, focusing more on appeal than functionality.

Pocketnow’s Jaime Rivera echoed similar views in his rating as tech expert Ben Sin of XDA-Developers, the latter noting that the Asian market for “bigger” iPhones with better specs was higher, while the iPhone 12 Mini was Descended to an enthusiast or niche class that didn’t sell as much as the Vanilla iPhone 12 or the Pro models, even though they were significantly cheaper.
