Four of the e-scooter companies operating in Kelowna are teaming up to host safety training next week as concerns about scooter-related injuries grow.

Next Wednesday, Lime, Bird Canada, Roll and Zip are hosting the Scoot Safe Kelowna Event in Stuart Park Park from 12pm to 3pm

Companies say the free event is hosted by “trained professionals” who help new and inexperienced drivers learn how to use the scooters safely.

“Safety is key to any successful scooter-sharing program and our First Ride training has taught thousands of drivers in cities around the world how to drive safely,” said Jonathan Hopkins of Lime Canada.

“When scooters are new to a community, it can take a moment for everyone to adhere to safe community standards. By efforts like this and enforcing those who refuse to obey clear rules, we are creating a safe program and community for all. “

The e-scooter program, launched in Kelowna in April, has faced complaints about use on city sidewalks, as well as safety concerns. Last month, Dr. Steven Krywulak, chief of orthopedic surgery at Kelowna General Hospital, said they had to cancel non-urgent hospital operations due to the increase in scooter injuries.

In a requested report to the city council last week, Dr. Interior Health’s Silvina Mema said there had been a “reported increase in injuries” related to the scooters, but it would take time to compile data on the full impact of the scooters.

In a press release, the Lime, Bird Canada, Roll and Zip scooters say they’ve worked with the city to address concerns. They say they have lowered the speed limit on scooters to 8 mph for first-time riders, imposed fines for “non-compliance,” increased resources for enforcing and re-parking misplaced scooters, and introduced a “cognitive test” to test driving in the To deter intoxication.

Companies also encourage drivers to wear helmets.

“Wearing a helmet is the easiest and most effective way to prevent concussions and protect your brain while driving e-scooters,” said Mia Burgess, CEO of BrainTrust Canada. “The BrainTrust Canada employees will be on site on Wednesday to provide helmet fitting training for all participants.”

Interested parties must register here in advance. Those who successfully complete the course will receive a free helmet and free riding credits.
